With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, several live theatrical productions will be making their final performances this week before closing for the holiday season. Productions including Elf, A Christmas Story, and A Christmas Carol will be making their final performances this week and into next week so those looking to get tickets for these shows before they end for the season will want to act fast. The world of Broadway was dealt some other big news this week with the death of two iconic Broadway actors who have recently passed away, Charles Durning and Jack Klugman. Both actors passed away this Monday and Broadway will be paying tribute to the fallen actors this Friday evening during all of their performances to observe the passing of these two talented performers.
All Broadway productions will be paying homage to the actors. This includes the highly anticipated Broadway musical “Dead Accountants” starring famed movie actress Katie Holmes. The production, which was highly anticipated by both Broadway fans and fans of the actress just announced it will be closing two months early and play its final performance on January 6th. Those who want to see Holmes take the stage live and see this modern musical in person will want to get their tickets now before the production ends.
Meanwhile in the world of sports, all eyes are on the NFL playoffs, more specifically all eyes are on who will be making a playoff berth in the final stretch of the season. This has had football fans focusing their attention on the Sunday Night football game between the Redskins and Cowboys in which the two power house teams will be facing off against one another to determine who will win the NFC East and earn an automatic playoff position. Tickets for this big Sunday night game have been selling fast as more fans than ever are looking to see this historic rivalry unfold as the stakes are now higher than they have been in years. This week the world of entertainment has been focused on the holiday season; with many of the biggest touring acts in music right now taking a break to enjoy the holidays at home. While most musical acts took a few days off from their tours before gearing up for touring action in 2013; the theatrical world was a buzz this holiday season with hit live theater musicals about the holidays from A Christmas Story to Elf and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are all heading into their final week of performances before the holiday season comes to a close. Most of these Broadway productions are only slated to play through the first of the year, so fans will want to get their tickets now before these plays close until next holiday season.
While there has been minimal news from the music and theater world around the holiday season, the professional sports world has been in full swing. With regular season NBA games lasting through the holidays; there has been plenty of basketball action to keep fans excited. With the New Year approaching it also means that more of the big bowl games on on the horizon. With several bowl games already played, some of the biggest ones yet, including the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl and the BCS National Championship are all set to kick off around the New Year. Tickets are still available for college football fans who want to get in on all of this action during bowl season.
Meanwhile, many sports fans have their eyes set of the NFL as the professional football league inches closet to playoff time. With the last weekend of the regular season of the NFL approaches and with many teams battling not only for a playoff appearance but for home field advantages and seeding this week, fans of the NFL can expect all types of action in the upcoming week. Furthermore, the last week of the regular season also means that NFL playoff tickets are on the horizon and that after next week fans looking to see their favorite teams take the field in the playoffs will be able to get tickets to see the playoffs live. With the week of Christmas celebrations ahead the official Christmas week kicked off with a blast with several big announcements in the entertainment world. However for most people this week is all about seeing Christmas-themed shows, music and events. Although the NHL season is currently suspended indefinitely, there will be plenty of NFL action on Christmas Eve with Monday Night football. The NBA will also be partaking in the holiday celebrations with several games taking place on Christmas day. This includes a highly anticipated match up between the new Brooklyn Nets as they take on the highly rated Boston Celtics on Christmas Day. Tickets for these games are still on sale and available for those looking to get in on all of the holiday action.
However, this week in entertainment isn’t only about big Christmas sports events, it is also all about the holiday themed celebrations. This of course includes the Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas production at Madison Square Garden. This is a live entertainment event unlike any other that is sure to fill the seats of the massive venue each and every night. Those who are looking to see a more traditional Broadway plays can enjoy seeing the limited time performances of the holiday musical Elf. Those who want to see another modern day Christmas tale can check out all of the action in A Christmas Story Live. This is a musical rendition of the cult classic holiday film that follows the story of a Midwestern Christmas.

The theatrical world received a big treat this week when the play Water by the Spoonful hit the NYC stage this week. This play was written by Quiara Alegria Hudes and was the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner in the drama category. This much talked about drama covering topics like addiction, recovery, family and military has captured the hearts of many already and will be hitting the Second Stage Theatre in NYC this week for live performances. Tickets are now on sale to see this much talked about production live.
While this low key performance will have many inspired, a much larger scale production is taking place down the street in New York City at Madison Square Garden. Tickets are currently on sale and productions are in full swing for the How the Grinch Stole Christmas Live production. The live musical event will feature famed actor Jeff McCarthy as the Grinch and the play will feature the classic music from the major motion picture. This event will be held in the massive Madison Square Garden arena in New York City and is expected to sell out night after night as thousands of families come to get in the holiday spirit and see this production live. One of the biggest announcements of the week however came from the when it was revealed that the Broadway League would be participating in show for Kids’ Night on Broadway. This annual event was designed to help kids and families get more involved in the world of Broadway and to experience all that live theatre has to offer. The recent announcement about the Kids’ Night on Broadway revealed that the event will take place from February 25th through March 3rd. During this time productions such as Annie, Drood, Once, Newsies, Cinderella and Spiderman will be participating as well as a few off-Broadway shows. Tickets for those ages 6-18 who want to attend a show will be free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. The theatre world has been treated to a number of big announcements this week that have had Broadway fans of all types anxiously awaiting several big upcoming performances. At the top of everyone’s list for 2013 performances is the highly anticipated new remake of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; the Tennesse Williams classic will feature a new Broadway stay beginning in January 2013 and will feature award winning actress Scarlette Johnasson. However, while many are anxiously awaiting this large scale production, other theatre fans have been focusing their attention elsewhere.
Many have been anxiously awaiting the upcoming United States version of the hit live musical Matilda. The musical rendition of this famed children’s book and family movie has already found a great deal of success in London and a new Broadway production is slated to appear in the United States in 2013. While the buzz surrounding Matilda the Musical has been high, there has been very little casting news until this week when it was revealed the Oliver Award winner Lesli Margherita would be joining Gabriel Ebert, Lauren Ward and Karen Alridge in the leading roles of this musical. It was also revealed that the production is officially set to open on March 4th of 2013 and that it will premiere at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway. Tickets for the event will be going on sale next month.
While Broadway is making room for the 2013 premier of Matilda; live theatre fans in Chicago just received big news this week when The Book of Mormon; the Tony Award winning hit musical began its extended stay in the Windy City this week. The production began shows on December 19th at the Bank of America Theatre. The production is scheduled to continue through June of 2013; but those who want to see Book of Mormon in Chicago will want to act quickly as tickets are already sold out through March of 2013.
The rock music world was also delivered with a surprise treat this week when the famed punk rock band the Deftones announced they would be hitting the road for a 2013 tour beginning in the spring of next year. The hard-rock veterans are set to tour around the United States to multiple large venues through most of next year as they promote their new album “Koi No Yokan.” Tickets will be on sale next month to the public; will you be seeing the Deftones live on the road?

The entertainment world was treated to several big announcements this week including a concert tour announcement from the highly successful rock band Yes. This award winning progressive rock group announced this week that they would be hitting the road in 2013 for an upcoming tour event that promises to be one of the most unique of its kind. Instead of taking a more traditional approach to their concert set list, the rock group will be playing through three of their albums in their entirety at each upcoming performance in 2013. This unique approach to their concerts for next year already has fans and critics alike buzzing. Those who are looking to see these unique live performances in person and to catch Yes on tour in 2013 will find the group on the road for most of the year. Tickets to 2013 concerts will go on sale beginning this Friday December 21st.
This week also marks the world premiere of the highly anticipated premier of Amy Herzog’s The Great God Plan. This production will open on December 18th and will follow a month of highly successful and well-reviewed preview performance. This play is set to run through the holiday season for the not-for-profit Playwrights Horizon and will feature the talents of Becky Ann Baker, Peter Friedman, Sarah Goldberg and Jeremy Strong. However one of the biggest announcements of the week undoubtedly came from the theatre world with the December 18th premier of the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. This major production is one of the most highly anticipated Broadway revivals in recent years as both fans and critics alike have been waiting to see a new revival of this Tennessee Williams 1955 drama. Previews will officially begin this week on December 18th and run until January 17th; the official opening of the production. The production is not only slated to feature one of the most popular dramas ever told but it is also slated to have some of the biggest talent as well. This rendition will feature the work of Tony Award winning director Robert Ashford and the talents of award winning actors Scarlett Johansson and Benjamin Walker in the lead roles. With December in full swing, for many football fans, it means college football bowl season. The first round of bowl games have started this week and ticket sales to those games were higher than they have been in years. With a number of big bowl games still slated for the rest of the month and into January of 2013; including many of the big BCS bowl games and the national championship bowl game, tickets are still available for those who want to see these live football events in person. Those who are still looking for remaining college bowl game tickets will find that most locations have options available but that they will still need to act with urgency as most tickets sell out by game day.
Meanwhile the theatre world received its own special treat as in the world of live theatre, this season is all about getting in the Christmas spirit. On December 15th it was revealed that the world premiere of A Wing in the Willows Christmas; a brand new musical from the Two River Theater Company would be hitting the stage. The new production is based off the fames children’s classic from author Kenneth Grahame and was created to provide wholesome holiday entertainment for the whole family. Tickets for opening night December 15th and the rest of the production’s live shows are now available.
While the sports world is undoubtedly excited for the upcoming bowl game season and the theatre world buzzing with excitement as well; the music and entertainment worlds were also treated to a special announcement this week when the comedic rock group Tenacious D announced they would be hitting the road for a 2013 tour. The rock group, fronted by famed comedian and actor Jack Black revealed that they would be on the road during 2013 for an entirely new tour. The tour, deemed the “Old School Acoustic Tour” will bring the band up close and personal with fans from all over the country as they support their new album “Rize of the Fenix.” This new tour will feature songs from their latest album along with several of their biggest hits from the past few years. This week, the world of Broadway was treated to the triumphant return of one of the most praised live musical productions when Picinic made its return to the stage. The play re-opened on Broadway on December 14th after it was announced earlier in the season that Picnic would return to oBroadway due to popular demand. This drama about a small-town community looking to see beyond the confines of their town and to the world beyond their home when an out-of-town stranger arrives to their community. The dramatic play already had a successful Broadway run and is returning once again after a tour across the country. The play, inspired by the Pulitzer-Prize winning book from William Ingle is once again playing live on Broadway and tickets are currently available for those looking to see the production live.
Those who are looking for a live Broadway experience beyond the streets of New York City will also be able to catch an award winning production when The Book of Mormon heads out on the road. Additional tour dates were announced for the production which will be visiting venues around the country into 2013. The wildly successful Broadway play, from the creative minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, has already gotten the attention of audiences from all over the globe and now thousands more from all over the country will get the opportunity to see this inspiring musical live. Even though the holidays are fast approaching, and many are ready to start enjoying their holiday breaks, the world of entertainment is still in full force and several big announcements were revealed from the entertainment world today. One of the first announcements came just in time for the holiday season as the professionals behind Madison Square Garden in new York City announced that on December 13th they would officially begin performances of the highly anticipated holiday production of Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is a limited time performance of the production and it will last through December 30th. With impressive pre-show ticket sales already through the roof, those who want tickets to see the production live will not want to wait as even the massive Madison Square Garden will not be able to hold all the fans that want to see this production live.
While happy, holiday centered news came from the streets of New York City, a more somber announcement was released this week for professional hockey fans. As millions of hockey fans from all over the country waited patiently for the return of the NHL hockey season with high hopes that they would be an early Christmas present with the announcement of the return of the NHL season; it was revealed today that the NHL lockout would continue. The league released an official announcement saying that games through December 30th would be cancelled as a result of new CBA results. There is no word on whether or not the league has plans for the season to return after the holidays or not.
While these two announcements have had fans of all types buzzing, there are very few announcements that have surpassed the buzz surrounded by the reveal from Justin Bieber this week. The teenage music icon officially announced 30 new concert tour dates for his 2013 nation-wide tour. The already sold out tour will be adding the stops to stretch the tour out through August of 2013. Those who want Justin Bieber tickets will be able to get tickets to the first 21 new shows on Friday December 15th while tickets to the remaining nine additional summer shows will go on sale Friday December 21st. These tickets are sure to sell out as fast as the rest of the concert tickets did; will you be getting yours?
