Super Bowl XLVII – Harbaugh vs Harbaugh

01.25.2013 at 8:16 pm by chicagojacobs

Super Bowl XLVII is the 47th Super Bowl, which pits one team from the American Football Conference (AFC), against a team from the National Football Conference (NFC).  This year’s game features the Baltimore Ravens from the AFC, and the San Francisco 49ers from the NFC.  The game is scheduled to be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 3, 2013.  Alicia Keys is scheduled to sing the National Anthem, and Beyoncé is scheduled to be the halftime performer.

This year’s Super Bowl has additional layers of intrigue.  In this year’s game, the coach of the Baltimore Ravens is John Harbaugh, and the coach of the San Francisco 49ers is Jim Harbaugh.  This is the first Super Bowl, which features brothers as the opposing head coaches.  The two brothers have faced off once before as head coaches, with John and the Ravens winning 16-6 in a 2011 game.

The Ravens come into the game as the AFC Champions, compiling a 10-6 record in the regular season, which saw them lose four of their last five games and firing Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron in the process.  In the playoffs, they won the Wild Card round game 24-9 at home against the Indianapolis Colts.  In the divisional round, they defeated the top-seeded Denver Broncos in Denver 38-35 in double-overtime.  In the AFC Championship game, the Ravens went into New England and defeated the Patriots 28-13 to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers come into the game as the NFC Champions, compiling an 11-4-1 record in the regular season.  The 49ers are the first team to reach the Super Bowl with a tie in the regular season since the 1987 Denver Broncos.  The team faced a quarterback controversy in the middle of the season when Alex Smith, having been incredibly dependable throughout the first half of the season, compiling a 6-2-1 record in games he started and led the league in completion percentage, went down with an injury.  Colin Kaepernick started in his place, and despite Smith’s success for the first part of the season, Kaepernick remained the starter for the rest of the season.  After receiving a first round bye, the team defeated the Green Bay Packers at home 45-31.  In the NFC Championship game, the team traveled to Atlanta, where they defeated the Falcons 28-24.
