This week, there were several big announcements from the world of Broadway about upcoming live theatrical productions, proving that 2014 will be an exciting year for the theatre world. One of the big upcoming performances for 2014 will be the production of Hedwig, which will star Neil Patrick Harris. This exciting new production will officially premiere on March 29th, 2014. In the play, Harris will take on a role as an East German transgendered rock singer in a production based off the 1998 musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The Broadway production of the show will play at the Belasco Theatre and will be directed by Michael Mayer. Tickets for this production are on sale now and available to those who want to see Neil Patrick Harris in this fun, over the top role.
Another big production for the 2014 spring theatre season will be the new rendition of the popular novel The Bridges of Madison County. This book, which was also transformed into a movie of the same name, has captured hearts all around the country and is now coming to the Broadway stage. Previews for this new musical will take place on January 17th at the Schonefeld and will star as Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale who play a photographer and a housewife that fall in love in Iowa in 1965.
Finally, one of the other big productions of 2014 will be the new musical rendition of Aladdin. This is the latest live production from Disney and will feature a unique score by Alan Menken, Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman. This story is based off the tale that was penned for the 1992 animated film. Now the production will get the big-budget Broadway treatment under director Casey Nicholaw. The fantastical tale will tell the story of Aladdin and feature fan favorites such as the genie, the magic carpet and all of the same characters that made this tale so memorable. Adam Jacobs will be taking on the title role in this production which will be held at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Tickets are on sale now and productions officially begin on February 26th.
