The Chicago Theater Scene

By David Jacobs | March 11th, 2014

Theater in Chicago has always flourished yet when many think of great theater and Broadway hits they think of New York’s thriving and world-renown theater scene. But steadily, Chicago is making a strong name for itself with its own impressive lineup of shows gracing its growing theater scene. And why shouldn’t it? With the city’s gorgeous and historical theaters, amazing views, great shopping, delectable food, and beautiful hotels, Chicago is the perfect place to wine, dine, and enjoy an incredible show or two. Famous Broadway shows like Wicked, The Lion King, and Book of Mormon have graced Chicago with incredible sold-out performances, leaving viewers begging for more. Below is a list of some of the shows currently performing or coming to Chicago soon.

Chicago Theater Million Dollar Quartet

A powerfully charged musical described as a “smash hit,” this show was inspired by the infamous first and only time musical recording session that took place in 1956 between Jerry Lewis, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Carl Perkins. This show will revive your musical soul. It’s now playing at the Apollo Theater.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

This world famous story comes to life in a musical the whole family will enjoy. It’s coming to Chicago this month. This was the first collaboration of Andrew Lloyd Webber of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Cats’ and Tim Rice of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘The Lion King.’ This Broadway show will definitely not disappoint its audiences when it debuts at the Cadillac Palace Theatre on March 18.

Motown: The Musical

The much-anticipated national tour debuts in Chicago for the first time in the spring of 2014. Reviewers are raving about the performances in this musical – they’re calling it more than a Broadway show but rather, “A celebration of music that transformed America” (CBS Sunday Morning). It launches at the Ford Oriental Theatre in Chicago on April 22.

The Wizard of Oz

This classical movie promises to be an aesthetically beautiful and brilliantly performed show that will touch the hearts of all ages, leaving everyone feeling like they just clicked their heels and entered into the life and journey of Dorothy and her friends. It opens on April 30 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.

The Book of Mormon

‘The Book of Mormon’ tickets were sold out in Chicago at prices the Chicago Theater scene has never seen before. Because of the 43-week success the show had in Chicago in 2013, it is looking to come back again but dates have not yet been announced. The show is projected to reappear during the fall or winter of 2014 – which is the perfect holiday gift for anyone who loves Broadway and wants to see one of the best musicals to ever have been created, having won a total of nine Tony Awards. The show made its Chicago home at the Bank of America Theatre.

Clearly, Chicago is on the “It List” for bringing incredible theater to its city. Not only does Chicago deserve the attention, but so do the people that flock to this booming metropolis city for entertainment in theatre. It’s a convenient place for those who live in surrounding states to travel to fairly easily to experience theater in ways they may not otherwise be able. And that, Chicago, is another reason we love you.
