This week, there were several major announcements regarding big Broadway and touring productions. Theater fans will be delighted to hear that these productions will officially be opening to the public, just in time for spring. One of the first big announcements came regarding the new national tour for the production Dirty Dancing. This production is an adaptation of the 1987 hit film of the same name. The show will be launching its national tour this summer, starting with a show in Washington, D.C. The show will be premiering at The National Theatre on August 26th before touring across the country to 30 different markets in North America. Stops along the way include shows in Houston, Boston, Seattle and Ottawa. No other information on the tour has been revealed at this point. Tickets are expected to go on sale next month to the public.
One of the biggest announcements of the week came from the production Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This play has been getting a great deal of attention during the early production and preview stages and now it has officially opened on the Broadway stage. The production will be taking place at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway. The play is directed by the Tony Award winner Michael Mayer and features an all-star cast of performers. The lead role is being portrayed by Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris. The actor is taking on the road of Hedwig, a transgendered rock singer. Harris recently underwent dramatic weight loss for the role to embody the rocker. He will be joined on stage by Lena Hall who just finished her run in the wildly successful production Kinky Boots.
Performances of this high energy show will run through August 17th. Since performances are limited, tickets to this show are expected to sell out quickly. With this in mind, fans will want to act fast to get their seats to see all of the action live. Tickets are currently on sale to see the production live. Will you be getting tickets to see Broadway’s most talked about live show before the curtain call in August?
