Sports Ticket Sweepstakes: Fans and Fansites

10.08.2009 at 4:32 pm by Amy

If you’re a real sports fan, you don’t just show it once a week during the big game! You keep up with team gossip, check standings often, and most of you have a favorite place online you can’t stay away from, whether it’s a mainstream sports site like ESPN, or a small fan page for your favorite team.

This next contest is for all of you – the sports fans AND the fansites who work so hard to keep you informed!

Beginning November 9 and lasting for one week, we’ll ask our Facebook fans to vote for their favorite sports or team-related fansite. At the end of the week, we’ll have a random drawing from all votes posted, and we’ll award two sports tickets to the winning voter, two more sports tickets for the website they voted for, and ANOTHER two tickets for the website that received the most votes throughout the week! That’s SIX TICKETS we’re giving away!

There’s plenty more details, so check the links below for the full details on how to win – and if you still have questions, ask away over at our Facebook page. We’re always listening. :)

Mini-giveaways galore!

Did you know that we’ve been giving away gift cards for milestone moments on our Facebook and Twitter accounts? We’re really close to our 1000th Facebook fan, and I’m holding onto a $50 gift code for that moment. If you have a friend who isn’t a fan yet, maybe this would be a good time to point them in the general direction of… oh… say… HERE?

Contest Winner Announced

09.14.2009 at 5:16 pm by Amy

In place of a Friday contest update, it’s the Monday winner’s announcement!

Thanks again to everyone who took part in the contest last week! After five days and ten questions, the winner of our trivia contest was Ryan Burkeen of Mexia, TX with 57 points – and as a Grand Prize, Ryan will be sitting 6th row at a Blink 182 concert ten days from now! (Not bad for just watching our Facebook and twitter feeds for a week and being quick with Google.)

For anyone who missed them the first time around, we’ll recap the last two questions:

====
Question #9: I’m sung by a band who has toured with Blink 182, and my lyrics include X-Men and a 12-sided die. What song am I?

Answer: Weezer’s song “In the Garage” features these lyrics: “I’ve got a twelve sided die – I’ve got Kitty Pride and Nightcrawler too, waiting there for me, yes I do.”

Question #10: George Bellamy of the UK band The Tornados had the first British single to ever hit number one on the US charts. Decades later, his son released a song widely thought to be inspired by that single. What was the name of the original single, and what was the song inspired by it?

Answer:
The song was Telstar (awesome song, by the way – if you’ve never heard it, it was way beyond its time), and Bellamy’s son Matthew later released the song Knights of Cydonia with guitar parts inspired by Telstar. And of course, the tie-in is that Knights of Cydonia was done by Muse, one of the bands touring with U2 this summer.
====

If you’ve been following us for any length of time, you’ve seen lots of chances to win, and there will be plenty more, so be sure to stick around. So what’s the next contest? We haven’t nailed that down yet, but it’ll probably involve more trivia, but with a random drawing element as well. Stay tuned, and you’ll get all the details once we’re ready!

Thursday Trivia Contest Update

09.10.2009 at 1:42 pm by Amy

It’s Thursday, and the contest ends tomorrow! It’s been great to see such a high level of participation, and we look forward to getting your thoughts after the contest on ways we can make the next one even better.

On to the update…

Question #5 was a tricky one, with lots of good guesses! To recap, the question was: “Where was Bono when he first came up with these lyrics? ‘I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.’”

The correct answer? Ethiopia.

The source was this interview done with Bono in Feb of 2009, and this exact passage:

“Do you want to know what my most humiliating U2 moment is?” [Bono] asks. “It’s Where The Streets Have No Name . Edge had come up with this amazing 120-beats-per-minute music for it. I had some ideas for the lyrics. I was sleeping in a tent in northern Ethiopia at the time [1985] and I scratched down some thoughts and they were: ‘I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.’

“I thought they were fairly inane, but in the studio Eno and Lanois thought they were perfect. I told them they were only sketches and I could do much better. But Eno is all about capturing the moment, so those words stayed.”

Question #6: The producer of one of Blink 182’s biggest albums passed away at a young age due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Who was the producer, and what were the name of the Morrissey album he had just finished working on before he passed away?

Answer: Jerry Finn, producer of Blink 182’s album Enema of the State, passed away shortly after completing Morrissey’s album “Years of Refusal.”

Question #7: In a 90’s concert tour, U2 entered the stage by walking out of a giant mirror ball shaped like a fruit. What was the name and year of the tour, and what was the fruit?

Answer: The tour was PopMart in 1997, where U2 pulled a Spinal Tap by walking out of a giant mirrorball shaped like a lemon. (And like Spinal Tap, I read in at least one account they got slightly stuck on the way out of it, which would have been hilarious to see.)

Question #8 is coming later today, so be on the lookout for our our twitter and Facebook feeds to get in first! We have a couple people pulling ahead in the contest, but with 3 questions left, plenty can still change. Here’s the standings so far:

Ryan B – 43
Dan B – 28
Eduardo V – 20
Jennifer F – 18
Hoon P – 15
Ryan S – 10
Laurie S – 6
Janet M – 5
Liz L – 3
Angela V – 3
Rachel H – 2
Rush L – 2
Jennifer S – 2
Megan P – 1
Corinne S – 1

Good luck!

Wednesday Trivia Contest Update

09.09.2009 at 12:37 pm by Amy

Trivia contest update!

We’ve had 3 posted questions since the last update, and they are:

Question #3: U2 had its first US top 40 hit with a powerful tribute to the late Martin Luther King. What was the name of the song, and what was the name and year of the first U2 album on which it appeared?

Answer: Pride (In the Name of Love), from the album Unforgettable Fire in 1984.

Question #4: The members of Blink 182 went on “indefinite hiatus” in 2005, but thrilled fans by announcing a new album and tour in 2009. Now for the multi-part question: What was the February 2009 event where that return was announced, and who was the Angels & Airwaves member who accidentally leaked early news of the new album days before that event?

Answer: The event was the 51st Grammy Awards, and the Angels & Airwaves member who leaked it was David Kennedy. In an online chat a few days before the Grammy Awards, he was answering questions about a new Angels & Airwaves recording session, and let it slip that Blink 182 would be recording a new album as well, which sent the fansites into a tizzy until the official announcement was made a few days later on the award program.

Question #5: Where was Bono when he came up with these lyrics from U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name”? ‘I want to run, I want to hide, I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside.’

Answer: Not telling yet, since we still don’t have our 5 correct answers! Get on over to the CTC Facebook wall and see if you think you know. :)

Current standings (NOT counting question 5, since that one is still active):

Ryan B – 32
Eduardo V – 20
Dan B – 15
Hoon P – 10
Jennifer F – 8
Liz L – 3
Angela V – 3
Rush L – 2
Laurie S – 1
Megan P – 1
Corinne S – 1

Still 5 more questions to be asked by end of day Friday, so keep watching our Facebook and Twitter feeds for your chance to get on the board!

It’s Tuesday, and that means we’re a day into our trivia contest! Questions one and two were posted yesterday, and they were:

Answer: His 1975 cream Gibson Les Paul guitar.

Question 2: Keeping it light, Blink 182 singer Tom DeLonge joked several times during last night’s concert in Denver about his intention to “do it with” a famous sports star. What was the name of the lucky object of DeLonge’s affection?
